Green Cleaning is defined as "Cleaning to Protect Health without Harming the Environment".

A simple yet powerful definition that suggests that green cleaning is about

much more than switching to and using green products.

Green Cleaning Principles

1. Clean to protect health and the environment first

Traditional cleaning is focused on appearance as the priority.  Green Cleaning combines products and the process to produce a healthy environment as the prime objective.  Usually, improved appearance is a by-product of an effective green cleaning program.

2. Minimize human exposure to contaminants and cleaning residues

The pillars of green cleaning focus on health, safety and the environment.  A cleaning product must be safe to use, have minimal effect on the health of building occupants, and pose little impact on the environment.

3. Make a commitment to education and training.

Education and training are key components to a successful green cleaning program.

Minimize the amount of pollutants entering a building, while maximizing the removal of pollutants.

Green cleaning is a proactive approach to the cleaning process that strives to incorporate preventive

                  measures into everyday cleaning processes.

4. Emphasize routine maintenance

Regular scheduled maintenance done with the right tools, the right frequency, by trained personnel can extend the time where more extensive cleaning and maintenance operations are needed..

5. Ensure worker and building occupant safety at all times

The safety of people using cleaning products requires proper training and a focus on products that work effectively without creating unnecessary hazards.

6. Communicate goals and the benefits of green cleaning.

Helping everyone understand the benefits of green cleaning is an ongoing challenge, that must be continuous.

7. Use chemical products that minimize environmental impacts.

Using products that have are less hazardous, less toxic, and readily biodegrade are essential parts of all

                green cleaning programs.
